Similar to flowering plants, ferns have roots, stems and leaves. However, unlike flowering plants, ferns do not have flowers or seeds; instead, they usually reproduce sexually by tiny spores or sometimes can reproduce vegetatively, as exemplified by the walking fern.

Care Instruction

Watering

In the summer months, aim to water your ferns every 4-5 days. During the winter, allow for a longer interval of 7-10 days. Keep in mind these guidelines to ensure your ferns stay healthy and thrive all year round.

Light

Most ferns prefer indirect light, which means you should avoid placing them where sunlight will hit them. In direct sun, fern fronds can get burned, resulting in a dry, crispy plant. Usually, a north- or east-facing window provides the right amount of light for ferns.

Potting Mix

When planting your ferns, choose a light, fluffy soil mix that contains plenty of organic matter, but not enough to make the soil so heavy and dense that it does not drain well. Most packaged houseplant mediums should work well as long as they are rich in porous organic materials such as peat moss or leaf mold.

Fertilizer

The optimal fertilizer for ferns is none other than worm castings, which are essentially the excrement of earthworms. They offer a well-balanced nutrient profile that promotes lush, green growth in ferns without the risk of over-fertilization.
